Cancer expertise
Areas of surgical oncology
An overview of the cancers Dr. Dhaval Thakkar assesses and treats surgically. Every plan is individual — what suits one person may not suit another.
01
Head and neck cancers
Cancers of the head and neck affect speech, swallowing and appearance, so planning considers both cancer control and function. Consultation focuses on understanding the extent of disease from examination and investigations, and explaining what surgery may involve.
May include
- Oral cavity cancers
- Neck lumps and lymph node assessment
- Planning for reconstruction where needed
02
Breast cancer and oncoplastic surgery
Breast cancer care is planned around the type and stage of the cancer and the patient's preferences. Where clinically appropriate, oncoplastic techniques aim to combine cancer surgery with attention to breast shape.
May include
- Evaluation of a new breast lump
- Breast-conserving surgery where suitable
- Oncoplastic approaches
- Axillary (underarm) lymph node surgery
03
Gastrointestinal and colorectal cancers
Digestive-tract cancers often need coordinated planning with gastroenterology, imaging and medical oncology. The consultation explains the sequence of treatment and what surgery would aim to achieve.
May include
- Stomach and oesophageal cancers
- Colon and rectal cancers
- Minimal access approaches where suitable
- Coordination with other specialists
04
Gynecological cancers
Gynecological cancers are assessed with imaging, pathology and sometimes tumour markers. Surgical planning is discussed alongside other treatments that may come before or after an operation.
May include
- Ovarian cancer
- Uterine (endometrial) cancer
- Cervical cancer
- Planning with medical and radiation oncology
05
Selected urological cancers
Some urological cancers fall within surgical-oncology practice; others are best managed with urology colleagues. Consultation helps clarify which pathway is appropriate for the individual case.
May include
- Assessment and second opinion
- Surgical planning for selected cases
- Referral and coordination where appropriate
06
Thyroid and endocrine cancers
Many thyroid nodules are not cancer. Evaluation with ultrasound and, where needed, a needle test helps decide whether surgery is required and how much of the gland should be treated.
May include
- Thyroid nodule evaluation
- Thyroid cancer surgery planning
07
Soft tissue, skin and bone tumours
Lumps in muscle or soft tissue, and some skin cancers, need careful assessment before any biopsy or removal. Correct planning from the start can matter for later treatment options.
May include
- Soft tissue sarcoma
- Skin cancers
- Selected bone tumours
- Biopsy planning
